Journey to Easter Sunday - Palm Sunday

Jesus Triumphant Entry

Good morning and Happy Palm Sunday to everyone.  Might today be a day filled with joy and expectation as you begin your day of worship.  This same expectation is what the city was experiencing as Jesus was approaching the city of Jerusalem.  Crowds were gathering and shouting his name from the top of their lungs.  It was an exciting time for the followers of Jesus.

All Four Gospels have an account of this time, which we call Palm Sunday.  I chose to share the passage from Mark.

Mark 11:1-10
11 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 3 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’”

4 They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it, 5 some people standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” 6 They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. 7 When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. 8 Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. 9 Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted,

“Hosanna!”
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
10 “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!”
“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

This test is filled with expectation and prophecy.  God has had a plan all along from the beginning of creation for this week and this very moment.  Look at how detailed God was to sent the two disciples ahead to get the colt.  They symbolism of the palm branches to celebrate their King.  Their long awaited Messiah - or deliverer - was here!  It was a joyous time.

Response:
As you enter into your day, this Palm Sunday, to worship, what is your expectation?  Is this another Sunday like any other Sunday, or do you sense an expectation of a special day to celebrate who Jesus is?  I know there were many in the crowd who were spectators on this day 2000 years ago, just watching, looking, but not participating.  It was not about hype or a one day event.  It was way more than that.  It was a culmination of a divine plan God had for His people.

So as you come to worship Jesus today, I challenge you to come with great expectation of meeting with Jesus.  Worship Him today and shout like the people did so many years ago, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
